Bulging, Degenerated & Herniated Discs

Damaged and Herniated Disc
Do you suffer from degenerative disc disease, herniated or bulging discs, sciatica, or other spinal problems?
Has your physician suggested you consider surgery? You may want to consider our multi-faceted approach, which includes:
- Brain Based Therapy
- Manipulation Procedures
- Pilates Based Physical Therapy Rehabilitation
These in combination, have proven to be effective in treating degenerative discs, facet syndrome, sciatica, and herniated discs. Specific spinal manipulation is just that; specific. The more specific we are in correcting the spinal misalignment by taking the precise pressure off the disc, the better the result. Pilates is performed one-on-one by a Master Pilates Instructor and under the supervision of Dr. Langstroth D.C. This superior method drastically increases spinal flexibility and helps stabilize the core strength of the spine to support the manipulations that align the spine for long lasting results. That is why specific alignment coupled with Pilates can be so powerful.
Research has already proven that an excellent core strengthening program is essential to avoid surgery. Some people think that if they just do back exercises they can whip their disc problem. That can happen, but with the more serious disc problems, there is always undo stress on the disc. Vertebra that are improperly rotated or tilted on one another can push the disc material off to the side. In addition, most of these patients have core strength weakness that contribute to the problem.
If you have already had surgery, these procedures can still be considered if you suffer from failed back surgery syndrome. We will always do a proper evaluation to determine what spinal levels need to be addressed, what specific gentle technique can or should be performed and what type of rehabilitation is needed for your individualized needs.
Spinal discs do not get oxygen and fresh blood consistently. Old injuries such as falls, sports, auto accidents, improper lifting while twisting can cause two things to occur. First, misalignments of the vertebrae that put improper stress on the discs and second, soft tissues become damaged and tear causing scar tissue formation to grow the tears back together. This scar tissue is an in-elastic tissue that hardens like glue over time. This prevents motion (which is the key to healthy discs) and reinforces the misalignment if never corrected at the time of injury. Proper motion creates a natural “pumping” mechanism which self hydrates the disc by sucking fluids back into the disc. Misalignments and scar tissue cause a “locking up” of these spinal segments leading to disc bulging, herniation and degeneration.

Pilates is crucial in improving flexibility and core strength that is so often lost in patients with damaged discs. Most of you have significant stiffness and decreased flexibility in addition to your pain. It is also vital for improving and maintaining strength to last for years to come.
Brain Based Therapy
Brain Based Therapy involves treating the central nervous system that is responsible for sensing pain. Specialized treatment is geared toward stimulating under-firing parts of the brain responsible for creating increased sensitivity to your pain sensing nerves. This is a completely non-painful form of treatment that uses many forms of stimulus in the form of eye movements, smell, sound, heat, and other modalities.
Brain Based Therapy, Specific Spinal Manipulation and Pilates Based Physical Therapy is typically performed in combination. Patients usually have treatment three times a week for four to five weeks and are then re-evaluated for progress. Most patients find pain relief within days or 2-3 weeks of treatment. However, to achieve maximum and long-lasting relief, commitment to the entire recommended treatment program is necessary.
