Migraines and Chronic Headaches
IF YOU WANT A SOLUTION TO YOUR HEADACHES, THEN YOU MUST READ THIS!
There are three types of primary headaches: Tension-type (muscular contraction headache), migraine (neurological/vascular headache) and cluster headaches. Most of these can fall under the heading of cervicogenic, meaning they come from the neck.
I want to ask you a very serious question and I want you to be honest with me.
How are your headaches effecting your life in the following categories?
- Work-calling in sick, loss in productivity, ability to think and function
- Family-Are they interfering in relationships causing you to disengage, avoid communication and yell at loved ones. Are you avoiding spending time with your children or spouse?
- Finances-Do your headaches decrease your ability to think and make money or be ambitious?
- Relationship-Are your headaches causing you to become a stick-in-the-mud. Are you any fun to be around?
If they are affecting you in this way, then maybe you should do everything in your power to find a doctor that takes your headaches seriously. Headaches can be intense or throbbing and often one-sided or behind the eye. The pain-sensitive structures of the neck/head are the culprits. When these parts are inflamed, stretched, pulled, or under pressure, any type of headache may be caused.
I have observed a common pattern of upper cervical misalignments that upset the nerves in the neck leading to most tension/cluster type headaches.
This can easily be corrected with Specific Chiropractic Manipulation (Accurate adjusting techniques). The more specific our correction is, the better the result. Most headache sufferers get neck pain with movement which, is a key sign it’s coming from the neck! Neck positions will increase the headaches.

Normal cervical curve
I have found that almost every cervicogenic headache sufferer will either have a loss of cervical curve or an obvious combination of neck misalignments that can only be detected by x-ray.

Reversal of the cervical curve
Many headache sufferers have a reversal of the cervical curve. Treatment must address this issue because the forward bending of the neck pulls on the muscles that can put pressure on the nerves as they travel through the sub-occipital muscles. A job requiring you to look down (desk job or computers) usually makes this worse.
The migraine headache is perhaps the best known type of headache. It is really called the migraine syndrome. By syndrome we mean that a lot of things accompany the headache – all of them bad.Symptoms include dizziness, visual problems, “spots” before the eyes, redness, swelling, tearing of the eyes, muscle contraction, irritability, nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea.
These symptoms often arise before the headache hits and they can be agonizing!!
Migraine headaches can be classified into two types: classical and common. There is now a new treatment for migraines that is revolutionary. Brain Based therapy (BBT) was created by Dr. Frederick Carrick Ph.D., D.C., and this treatment has changed the way I practice. What we are finding in many migraine sufferers is an over-firing mesencephalon (upper brain stem) that will cause additional symptoms of: increase in heart rate, insomnia or restless sleep, urinary tract infections, increase warmth or sweating, sensitivity to light, and significant fatigue or even depression. Other associated symptoms can also occur. There is also decreased output of the cerebellum. The cerebellum is in the back part of the brain, and it controls all of the involuntary spinal musculature. This can lead to balance disorders/incoordination as well.
Brain imbalances can be treated regardless of how long you have had them!!
All that needs to be done is a high level neurological evaluation to determine the cause of your headaches. Certain lab tests may also be required to find other underlying causes such as: allergies, toxicities or hormonal imbalances. This is called functional medicine/nutrition.
