Repetative Cervical Linear Traction Exercise

Repetative linear cervical traction is an excellent part of the initial rehabilitation process. This exercise is active in nature meaning it is not passively being done ‘to you’. You are fully engaged in the exercise as you are in control and performing it as an exercise. Strapped into a neck harnass, the patient drops down and is in complete control of how much traction is being applied on their own neck. Not only does this stretch scar tissue (preventing adhesions) and allowing for better healing, but it helps straighten the neck while restoring the normal curve to the neck.

Loss of the normal cervical curve seen here

It is very common for the neck to whip during a car accident. This is known as whiplash. Whether someone hits you from behind or you hit someone in front of you, in both cases your neck will whip forward and often go beyond the normal range of motion. This tears ligaments in the neck and can result in a loss of the normal curve.

It is extremely important for part of the treatment to be centered on returning the curve back to normal because research shows there is a poorer long-term prognosis. Reversed curves are associated with compression of the discs and accelerated disc degeneration. This type of traction is therefore great for disc problems and can help many people.

Once the curve improves, then a more aggressive type of rehabilitation would be appropriate called Pilated Based Physical Therapy. This focuses on strengthening the weak muscles that can contribute to neck pain so that you can reach your fullest potential in recovery. Our 2 tiered physical rehabilitation is very effective in recovering from significant neck pain and injury.
